On a Tuesday evening just before Christmas the Residents, families and friends gathered for our annual Christmas party. The wine flowed, there were lovely sandwiches, nibbles and mince pies to eat, all passed around by smiling, happy staff. The talented young singer Jade Marie, entertained us for most of the evening with festive tunes old and new – such a lovely voice! Some managed a bit of a dance and we all joined in with the song and laughter. When the night staff arrived we were still going strong so they just joined in! As always Giles and Helen would like to thank ALL the staff for making the evening so enjoyable.
Opening of new Garden Room and bedrooms in the old cottage
We are pleased to announce the opening of our lovely new Garden Room and luxury bedrooms. After nearly a year’s work we have completed the new reception, dayroom, luxury en suite bedrooms, and laundry at Somerset House. Converting the disused cottage to provide three luxury bedrooms all with large walk in showers has taken some time, but we are very pleased with the results. Linking the cottage to the main house has created the beautiful new Garden Room which together with a spacious new reception and entrance, makes the Home feel airy and fresh and we are looking forward to using the big space for future functions and entertainment. Do come and have a look!
Shared resources available
We have several resources that are available for all to use in Somerset House, please feel free to make use of them or speak to Sue if there are any other resources you would like. We have bought an electronic magnifier for the home which can be available for use by all, please make arrangements with Sue if you would like to use this. It is a portable, full colour video magnifier that plugs straight into a television. It is perfect for reading books and magazines, studying maps, photographs or objects. There are also books, games, puzzles and DVDs available in the second lounge as well as a Wii. We are currently in the process of upgrading our Wi-Fi access and computer provision in communal areas for residents access to e-mail, internet and Skype etc and also installing a new digital telephone system throughout the House.
Looking forward to activities
Now that the shortest day and Christmas are behind us we can begin to look forward to planning for spring and the better weather. We will be resuming the gardening group soon to start to plan the planting of the resident’s garden. A new path around the garden is planned for spring so Residents can see the lovely flower borders Tom has planted. Regular minibus trips will also resume in May so we can begin to think about where we would like to go. We will continue to enjoy a varied programme of activities including entertainment from external providers which we can hold in our new Garden Room. If anyone has any suggestions for any activities they would like to be included in the programme, either regularly or as a one-off please let Sue know.
